Perth Baseball Club

Founded 1946

Organised baseball in Western Australia began in 1936 and one of the inaugural teams was Chevs. This club comprised many employees of Sydney Atkinson Motors, distributors of Chevrolet cars, hence the nickname and the "Chevy" which still today is a major sponsor of U.S. Major League Baseball.

Chevs remained one of the leading teams until late 1941 when the competition lapsed because of World War II. The winter of 1946 brought about the formation of the Western Australian Baseball League and Perth Baseball Club was formed. The club fielded two teams - A Grade and B Grade.

There were 8 clubs each comprising 2 teams and in the A Grade finals Perth won the second semi-final only to lose the Grand Final to Victoria Park in 12 innings.

It took just 3 years to win our first Premiership in 1949 - and we repeated the feat in 1950. In fact, Perth has won the League Premiership on 16 occasions - more than any other club!

The League team has played in the finals in 18 of the last 22 years of the W.A. Baseball League and Baseball W.A.  The latest League Premiership victory was 2005-2006.

Perth Baseball Club also proudly boasts having had many of the most outstanding baseballers, coaches and administrators not only in this State but in Australia. Some of the names which readily come to mind include George Dickinson, Alf Hickinbotham, Tommy Smith, Bandy McPherson, Ron Thornton, Eric Robertson, Barry Stace, Terry Lean, the Moyle Family, Rod Byrne, Ray Michell, Tony Adamson, John Moore, Shane Tonkin and club stalwarts Vic Barrett, Jack Cody, Ned Halse, Graham List and Larry Caple.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Shane Tonkin, Fred Lindberg and John Moore proudly represented Australia - the most of any one club in the land. Michael Moyle followed by playing at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In addition, there have been not less than fifty five Perth players chosen to play for Western Australia and nineteen of those went on to represent Australia.

For the over 40 years, our home ground has been at Inglewood Oval, Central Ave, Inglewood- only 7 kms from Perth CBD.

Perth Baseball Club has six senior grades, enabling players of all degrees of ability to enjoy their baseball, both on and off the field. We also have a strong Junior Program which gives opportunities to children from 8 to 18 years to participate and also receive top level coaching.
